Located within Barra Honda National Park, which is approximately 152 miles west of San Jose, Costa Rica in the Nicoyo Peninsula lie some of the world's most intriguing caves. Although forty-two caves stretch throughout the park, the deepest of which runs 240 meters, only one, Terciopelo Cave, is open to the public. If you are in the area, this cave is worth exploring to see the stalactites and stalagmites within. If you are lucky, you may also spot some ancient relics left behind from early civilizations. Relics as well as human remains have been found throughout the many caves in this region.

If you plan on visiting Terciopelo Cave you will need to go with an official guide who can take you into the cave. Obtaining a guide can be arranged by telephoning the Ministerio de Ambiente y Energia (MINAE). Additionally, the cave can only be visited during Costa Rica's "dry season" that is from mid-November through April and only when the park is open, between 8am and 4pm daily. You will also need to bring your own caving equipment. If you do not have your own equipment, you can rent it at the park's main entrance. Rental of caving equipment costs approximately $5.00 per person. Additionally, you will need to pay a park entrance fee of $6.00 per person plus guide fees. Guide fees vary depending on how many people will be accessing the cave as one group and cost from $3.50 per person for larger groups, to $12.00 per person for smaller ones.

Another important fact to note if you plan on visiting the cave it to be aware that the cave is home to many bats, which roam freely within. If you are squeamish towards these creatures, it is advisable that you do not venture into the cave. Otherwise, if bats do not bother you, the cave is worth exploring as the guides are knowledgeable and friendly as well as safety oriented. Visiting Terciopelo Cave is a unique experience and one that should be taken if you are looking for an adventurous tour while in Costa Rica.
