Breif biography of Henrik Pontoppidan, recipient of the 1917 Nobel Prize for Literature.

Henrik Pontoppidan, recipient of the 1917 Nobel Prize for Literature, was born in Fredericia, Denmark. His father was a theologian who followed N.F.S. Grundtvig. He was educated at the Polytechnic Institute in Copenhagen where he studied engineering. He worked briefly as a teacher before devoting his time to writing.

Pontoppidan published hs first book, STAEKKEDE VINGER (CLIPPED WINGS), when he was 24. His best-known works are three novel series, DET FORJOETTEDE LAND (1891-95), LYKKE PER (1898-1904), and DOS RIGE (1912-1916).

Henrik Pontoppidan died in Ordrup, Denmark in 1943.
